In a significant shift for New York's largest health care workers union, members of SEIU 1199 East elected Yvonne Armstrong over incumbent George Gresham, reflecting dissatisfaction with his leadership. The vote, which resulted in a landslide 26,623 to 11,722, followed serious allegations of financial mismanagement against Gresham, long known for his advocacy in increasing minimum wage and Medicaid funding. Despite his defeat, Gresham expressed pride in his service and unity among members, indicating the election's importance amidst ongoing union challenges.
Gresham also is in poor health.
It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your President for the past 17 years.
