NYPD's Red Light Criminalization Marks 'Obscene' Escalation: Advocates - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

The NYPD's recent shift to criminally charge cyclists and e-bike riders for minor violations marks a significant backlash against past decriminalization efforts aimed at supporting community safety and equity. Advocates argue this policy threatens vulnerable populations, as minor infractions can lead to severe consequences, including legal action and potential deportation. Critics, including transportation advocacy leaders, highlight that this approach lacks foundation in safety data and best practices, marking a troubling escalation in police enforcement tactics and potentially exacerbating the injustices faced by cyclists, especially people of color.
"This is an obscene escalation from the police department - and not one that's grounded in real safety, data, or best practices," Transportation Alternatives's Executive Director Ben Furnas said in a statement.
"[Now] a person on a bike who treats a stop sign as a yield sign can receive a criminal summons - a dangerous escalation that can quickly lead to a prison sentence or even deportation."
The NYPD quietly revealed last week that they will give out criminal court summonses for six violations - including reckless driving, operating under the influence, and more.
The enforcement dragnet has also already picked up non-e-bike riders who weren't breaking the law, Streetsblog reported.
