In April, New York City's overall crime rate dropped for the seventh consecutive month, according to NYPD statistics. While the index crime fell by 3% year-over-year, notable increases were observed in murders, shootings, and subway-related crimes. Specifically, murders rose to 28, compared to 25 in April 2024, although overall homicides are down 24% for the year. The NYPD has implemented various strategies contributing to the decrease in robbery, burglary, and grand larceny rates, while also introducing new initiatives like the Quality of Life Division to address ongoing challenges and enhance public safety.
Crime is down for the seventh month in a row, and that's the direct result of the strategies we've put in place and the tireless work of the men and women of the NYPD, Tisch said. But even with that progress, we aren't satisfied; there is always more we can do to reduce crime and ensure that New Yorkers feel safe.
In April, murders slightly increased with 28 homicides reported, three more than the same time last year, yet overall numbers show a 24% reduction year-to-date.
