Long-stalled safety reforms for New York City's private trash hauling industry will delay full implementation of commercial waste zones until the end of 2027. The City Council mandated these reforms in 2019 to mitigate risks posed by private garbage trucks, which had been linked to fatal accidents. Only one of 20 planned zones has been launched, prompting criticism from lawmakers for the administration's slow approach. Though two new zones will be established soon, concerns remain over the timeline and commitment to citywide implementation.
I must emphasize that if this implementation had been rushed, if we had been spread thinner, if the carters had not been given the time to do this right, it absolutely would have failed and the entire program might have fallen apart.
The reforms we passed in 2019 are mandates, not recommendations. From the beginning, the commercial waste zone rollout was supposed to be citywide, not the piecemeal approach this administration has chosen.
