The city's largest municipal workers union, District Council 37 (DC 37), has ranked City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams as its top candidate for the 2025 NYC Mayor's race. This endorsement comes at a crucial time as Adams anticipates support from Attorney General Letitia James. Also ranked were Queens Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani and Brooklyn state Senator Zellnor Myrie. DC 37 plans to mobilize its 150,000 workers to vote, emphasizing the impact of this election on local workers' rights amid ongoing federal challenges.
Speaker Adams is expected to receive the backing of state Attorney General Letitia James at a Wednesday news conference in Manhattan, signaling strong support for her campaign.
DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido emphasized the importance of local elections, stating, 'At a time when workers' rights are being ripped apart at the federal level, it's more important than ever to elect local candidates who will fight for working families.'
The union, representing 150,000 municipal workers and 89,000 retirees, also highlighted the significance of this election as members are voting not just for their mayor but also for their employer.
Despite being the frontrunner, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo was excluded from the DC 37 slate, showcasing the union's shift in endorsement strategy for this election.
