Deepa Roy and Victor Quimis forged the signature of Renuka Bherwani to illegally take over her Kew Gardens Hills house. Bherwani, who was suffering from dementia and in hospice care, did not authorize the transfer. This fraudulent act was discovered by her family through a congratulatory letter. Roy had befriended Bherwani in 2022 and attempted to move into her home. Quimis faces multiple charges while Roy remains at large. They are the first prosecuted under New York's new deed theft law.
"Deepa Roy and Victor Quimis preyed on an elderly widow in hospice to steal the home she owned for nearly 40 years," AG Letitia James said.
"I was angered beyond belief because I was dealing with the sadness of imminently losing my mother and at the same time dealing with fraudsters who were trying to steal from her," her son Kamal Bherwani, 56, told The Post by phone.
