NYC bike lane accident involving 3-year-old girl erupts into explosive campaign issue
Briefly

A recent incident in Brooklyn, where an e-biker injured a 3-year-old girl, has ignited a fierce political battle. Candidate Sabrina Gates criticized incumbent City Council member Lincoln Restler for his support of bike lanes, calling them hazardous. Restler defended bike lanes as a safety measure but acknowledged the uptick in accidents involving children. Mayor Eric Adams also weighed in, urging attentiveness to community concerns. This debate not only concerns bike safety but also highlights the tension between local government and public opinion in urban planning.
"Even before the bike lane, Bedford Avenue was a chaotic street. It's a hazard," said Gates, ripping the pro-cyclist Restler as not heeding the community's concerns after the tot was injured over the weekend.
Restler defended his support of protected bike lanes, stating, "Protected bike lanes are proven to make streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles... I've been on the record repeatedly urging... safety enhancements."
Mayor Eric Adams, on his X campaign account, disputed Restler’s statement by saying, "Let's be clear: @LincolnRestler never called for modifying or removing the protected bike lane on Bedford Ave."
Adams emphasized, "But when the people speak, we listen - with or without their councilman's support..."
