In the recent Brooklyn City Council primary elections, incumbents predominantly retained their positions, with Councilmember Shahana Hanif winning 70% of votes against Maya Kornberg in a District 39 race seen as a proxy for the Israel-Palestine conflict. Councilmember Inna Vernikov secured 66% in District 48, defeating Ari Kagan. Meanwhile, Kayla Santosuosso, backed by Councilmember Justin Brannan, garnered nearly 80% in District 47. Darlene Mealy leads in District 41 but awaits final tallies due to ranked-choice voting complexities, with results expected soon.
Councilmember Shahana Hanif scored around 70% of the first-round Democratic primary votes cast in her brownstone Brooklyn District 39, leaving lawyer Maya Kornberg far behind.
Councilmember Inna Vernikov also notched an easy victory in her southern Brooklyn District 48's Republican primary, receiving 66% of the vote, over former councilmember Ari Kagan.
Term-limited Councilmember Justin Brannan supported his chief counsel Kayla Santosuosso for the southern Brooklyn District 47 seat. Santosuosso won the Democratic primary with nearly 80% of the vote.
