Governor Kathy Hochul of New York announced plans to construct a new nuclear power plant capable of generating at least 1 gigawatt of electricity. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, as Hochul emphasized the necessity of nuclear power for the state’s energy strategy. The project is still in its early stages, with the New York Power Authority yet to determine a location or design. Hochul noted potential collaboration with private partners and highlighted recent clean energy deals involving tech giants like Microsoft and Meta, showcasing a growing commitment to nuclear energy despite industry challenges.
“If you take nuclear off the table, you have to burn more fossil fuels,” Hochul said at a press conference. “That's not going to work for us here in New York.”
Plans for the new nuclear power facility are still in the initial stages with no location or design decided, as indicated by the New York Power Authority.
