"The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or smoke bomb. It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device (IED)."
"A home-made explosive thrown near anti-Islam protesters outside the New York mayor's home was a viable device "that could have caused serious injury or death", police said on Sunday."
"Police had said on Saturday that the devices were jars wrapped in tape and containing nuts, bolts and screws - typical components of an IED."
During a far-right protest outside New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani's home opposing public Muslim prayer, two suspicious devices were thrown by a man identified as Emir Balat. Police determined the devices were improvised explosive devices containing nuts, bolts, and screws wrapped in jars with tape. The NYPD Bomb Squad confirmed the ignited device was a viable IED capable of causing serious injury or death, not a hoax device. Balat shouted "Allahu akbar" during the incident, prompting counterterrorism detectives to investigate. Two men were arrested: Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, who reportedly handed over a device that Balat had thrown near police.
