New York Judge Blocks ICE Agents From Entering Rikers Island Prison
Briefly

A New York judge has temporarily halted an executive order permitting ICE agents access to Rikers Island, amid a legal battle involving Mayor Eric Adams and the City Council. Judge Mary Rosado's decision prevents the city from finalizing the order until a court hearing is held on Friday. The City Council filed a lawsuit against the order, accusing the mayor of political collusion with the Trump administration. Council members expressed that the initiative threatens public safety and is rooted in political negotiations rather than community welfare.
"This isn't public safety - it's political blackmail," Council Member Alexa Aviles said in a prepared statement. "Turning Rikers into an outpost for the Trump administration's extreme agenda has nothing to do with protecting New Yorkers and everything to do with the Mayor protecting himself."
"The Council is taking this fight to court to defend our city when the mayor won't and calling this what it is: a disgraceful and blatant quid pro quo," Aviles said.
