A maintenance worker at New Orleans's jail, Sterling Williams, was arrested for allegedly aiding in the escape of ten inmates. Williams reportedly admitted to turning off the toilet water at the request of an inmate, which allowed the men to slip through a hidden hole. The escape, which was meticulously planned, occurred while the only staff member monitoring the inmates left for food. As of now, four of the escapees have been recaptured, while six remain at large, raising concerns over security protocols at the facility.
Williams's actions were allegedly motivated by an inmate's threat, making the escape possible as it prevented the flooding of the cell that could have been detected.
The investigation revealed that the escape was a coordinated effort, taking advantage of a weak point in security due to a lone staffer monitoring ten inmates.
The escape highlights serious security breaches at the Orleans Justice Center, where inmates awaited trial for violent crimes when they managed to flee.
