"Fear not, bike lane fans - the Bedford Avenue bike lane did not come up in Zohran Mamdani's conversations with Satmar Hasidic leaders, one of whom endorsed the mayoral frontrunner on Sunday, sources tell Streetsblog. Moshe Indig, the political director for the Satmar faction led by Kiryas Joel-based Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum - and an outspoken proponent of Mayor Adams's decision earlier this year to rip up three blocks of the Bedford Avenue protected bike lane - told Streetsblog he didn't raise concerns about any bike lanes in his conversations with Mamdani."
"The mayor over the summer ripped up three blocks of the new-ish protected bike lane at the behest of Satmar leaders, who he hoped would back him in his since-abandoned re-election bid. In late August, Adams's advisor Ingrid Lewis-Martin was indicted for taking bribes to influence a different bike lane project. In response, Mamdani pledged to complete bike lane and bus projects Adams stalled, scaled back or killed - including Bedford Avenue,"
Zohran Mamdani did not raise the Bedford Avenue bike lane with Satmar Hasidic leaders, according to sources. Moshe Indig, political director for the Satmar faction led by Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, said he did not raise concerns about bike lanes during talks with Mamdani. Indig supported Mayor Adams's decision earlier this year to remove three blocks of the Bedford Avenue protected bike lane. Indig's "Ahronim" sect and the larger "Zalonim" cousin declined to endorse a mayoral candidate. Indig appeared with Mamdani, though some Ahronim leaders later condemned Mamdani and backed Cuomo. Mamdani pledged to complete bike lane and bus projects that Adams stalled, scaled back, or killed.
