Mayor Daniel Lurie addressed a concerned crowd about ongoing drug issues in the 16th Street area, admitting improvements are needed despite police presence. Newly-appointed Mission captain Liza Johansen expressed the need for more resources to combat drug use pushed from prior operations in the Tenderloin. The community, represented by the 16th Street Alliance, expressed support for a focused police presence and Lurie's commitment to staffing the police force, increasing treatment options, and facilitating new businesses, as part of his broader campaign promises.
"The resources from downtown are being focused on Caledonia, Wiese, Julian and the plazas," Johansen said, referring to nearby alleyways.
"We’re going to work on that," Lurie promised in response to the need for more resources for the newly-appointed Mission captain, Liza Johansen.
Lurie said he has three priorities: fully staffing the police force, adding treatment beds, and streamlining a permitting system for new businesses.
Johansen acknowledged that the 16th Street plazas and nearby streets had been impacted by an earlier operation in the Tenderloin."
