Newark Mayor Ras Baraka vehemently defended himself against accusations from interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba regarding his arrest at an ICE detention facility during a protest against its reopening. Despite claims that he ignored warnings to vacate, Baraka insisted he received no such instruction during over an hour on site. He criticized Habba's understanding of the situation, asserting she wasn't present and should seek better information. Baraka reiterated his belief that he acted within the law, countering Habba's narrative that he willfully disregarded it.
The way she puts what happened today is, she is accusing you of ignoring multiple warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to remove yourself and says that you chose to quote disregard the law, Collins said of Habba.
She doesn't know what happened. Clearly, that is not the context of what happened. I was there for over an hour in that space, and nobody ever told me to move.
Alina Habba wasn't there. So she should get some better information.
Baraka said he did not break the law and expressed frustrations about the inaccuracies in Habba's statements.
