Mayor Eric Adams announced the removal of protective barriers on Brooklyn's Bedford Avenue bike lane due to safety complaints voiced by local residents, particularly from the Hasidic community in South Williamsburg. The bike lane, originally redesigned to improve safety due to chaotic traffic, faced backlash after incidents, including one involving a child. A town hall highlighted community concerns, leading to a decision to revert to a previous design. The change reflects a commitment to prioritizing the community’s voice in urban planning and safety.
After several incidents - including some involving children - on a section of the Bedford Avenue bike lane in Williamsburg, we decided to adjust the current design to better reflect community feedback.
Members of the local Hasidic community praised Adams' decision, emphasizing safety for children and thanking him for listening to their concerns.
