Mamdani's St. Pat's plans: Meal with ex-Ireland president, march with NYPD commissioner
"What we saw and heard underlines our personal conviction that there is not only an unfolding, human-caused famine in Gaza. There is an unfolding genocide. Robinson and former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark wrote in a statement following a visit to the Rafah border crossing last summer."
"It represents not just a celebration of the incredible contributions of Irish Americans to this city, but also one that celebrates so many of the different ethos that are core to the Irish spirit, including. Mayor Mamdani expressed his outlook on St. Patrick's Day celebrations in the city."
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will host Mary Robinson, the first woman elected president of Ireland, at a pre-dawn breakfast at Gracie Mansion before participating in the St. Patrick's Day parade up Fifth Avenue. Robinson served as Irish president from 1990 to 1997 and later became UN High Commissioner of Human Rights. She is a vocal advocate for Palestinians in Gaza and co-founded The Elders with Nelson Mandela. The breakfast marks Mamdani's first time hosting a foreign dignitary at the mayor's residence. Both Robinson and Mamdani share pro-Palestinian political positions. Progressive NYC mayors have previously faced criticism at St. Patrick's Day events, but Mamdani has found alignment with Robinson's humanitarian advocacy.
