Mamdani's Oct. 7 statement draws Israeli rebuke, as anniversary bares divides among NYC mayoral candidates - Jewish Telegraphic Agency
"War crimes cannot justify other war crimes."
"Stop the Genocide. Save Gaza. Free All Hostages."
"Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more,"
The second anniversary of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack coincided with a New York mayoral race that foregrounded Israel and Gaza issues. A vigil in Union Square drew Israelis for Peace activists who have rallied weekly for a ceasefire, hostage releases and an end to Israel's Gaza campaign. Zohran Mamdani attended the vigil with Brad Lander, held a lit candle and listened to Israeli and Palestinian speakers and local rabbis. Speakers condemned retaliatory actions in Gaza and displayed banners calling to stop the genocide and free hostages. Mamdani condemned the Oct. 7 massacre, called for hostages' return and accused the Israeli government of launching a genocidal war while mourning casualties.
