Major LIRR delays during Wednesday rush hour spark blame game between Amtrak and MTA
Briefly

Wednesday's morning rush hour experienced significant disruptions due to Amtrak's power issues in an East River tunnel, leading to five train cancellations, 43 delays, and six diversions. LIRR President Rob Free criticized Amtrak for inadequate maintenance, stating that the incident highlighted potential future problems from Amtrak's upcoming repair project planned for the shared tunnels. An Amtrak spokesperson acknowledged the incident and suggested that upcoming works could lead to similar issues if not managed properly. The MTA urged Amtrak to schedule repairs during off-peak hours to avoid further commuter inconveniences.
The massive disruptions this morning were the result of poor maintenance practices by Amtrak, affecting tens of thousands of LIRR customers, says LIRR President.
An Amtrak spokesperson indicated that the current service disruptions might foreshadow further issues in the future if full tube closures aren’t implemented.
