During a pivotal public comment session at City Hall, hundreds protested against Mayor Daniel Lurie’s proposed budget cuts, which threaten vital community services. Activists argued that the budget prioritizes funding for jails over essential programs that enhance public safety and wellbeing. They called for the city to reconsider its allocation, specifically suggesting to redirect funds reserved for potential legal issues with Airbnb. Community leaders emphasized the dire consequences of funding cuts for immigrant workers and expressed the need for a more inclusive approach to public safety that supports vulnerable populations.
Without the Workers Rights Community Collaborative to help them, those people would have no ability to fight for their legal rights. We need the city to fight for immigrant families.
This budget holds the criminal justice system harmless while balancing the budget on the backs of our people. It’s essential that we consider community-building programs.
