Mayor Daniel Lurie has launched a new public-private street-cleaning initiative in San Francisco, fulfilling his promise for a fresh start. The initiative is backed by billionaire donors Michael Moritz and Chris Larsen, who initially supported rival candidates during the mayoral elections. Through a nonprofit organization, Avenue Greenlight, they are contributing $3 million to the cleaning efforts, which aim to enhance existing public services. Lurie, Moritz, and Larsen came together for a press conference, highlighting a commitment to improving sanitation and competing effectively with other cities.
The $3 million cleaning money will initially cover the pilot for a year, Larsen said. He also emphasized that the idea is to supplement existing street cleaning efforts operated by Public Works.
It appears to be a move that underscores what Moritz said prior to the election about supporting whomever the winning candidate would be: 'Poor devils, they're going to need all the help they can get.'
