LIRR pushes back against Amtrak for May 23 closure of East River Tunnel lines
Briefly

The MTA has publicly challenged Amtrak's plans for a full shutdown of two East River rail tunnels, arguing that such actions could severely disrupt services for LIRR commuters. LIRR President Rob Free emphasized the importance of maintaining operational reliability amidst the repairs needed to address damage from Hurricane Sandy. While acknowledging the necessity of infrastructure repair, he criticized Amtrak for a lack of transparency regarding the project details and the handling of the closures, which are set to affect 125,000 daily riders over approximately 13 months.
I want to make sure that our operation maintains the high levels of reliability that we already have, LIRR President Rob Free said on May 15, 2025.
It's Amtrak's decision to make, he said. It's their responsibility, but with that responsibility comes ensuring that they properly manage this project and ensure LIRR operations are not negatively impacted.
