Knife-wielding retired NYC correction officer, 54, stabbed himself before being shot dead by Long Island cops during welfare check: sources
Briefly

Bruce Boyd, a retired New York City correction officer, was shot and killed by Suffolk County police on Friday after he reportedly charged at them with a knife. Responding to a welfare call, officers found Boyd, 54, bleeding from self-inflicted stab wounds. Despite police commands to drop the weapon, Boyd allegedly advanced towards the officers, resulting in at least one officer firing at him. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Colleagues expressed shock, describing Boyd as an admirable and respected figure in law enforcement.
A source who worked with him told The Post people who knew Boyd are "in shock." "He was a great guy. A great correction officer," the source said.
Officers quickly pulled back when they saw he was armed, but Boyd allegedly rushed at the cops and ignored their commands to drop the weapon, police said.
