The New York Police Department's counterterrorism unit is recognized as a leading force in the U.S., setting a global standard for preventing domestic terrorism. Retired LAPD Lieutenant Jeff Wenniger highlights the Department's integrated approach under Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner since 2023, that combines intelligence analysis with counterterrorism efforts. In response to post-9/11 threats, New York has developed the largest municipal operation of its kind in the country. This unit collaborates with the FBI through Joint Terrorism Task Forces, leveraging real-time intelligence and various indicators, including social media, to predict and mitigate potential threats.
"They are setting the bar for intelligence and counterterrorism throughout the world actually," Wenniger said, pointing to the department's integration of intelligence and counterterrorism under Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner since 2023.
Wenniger said counterterror squads evaluate potential threats by focusing on key indicators, such as social media, blogs and online communication.
It's about knowing and keeping your finger on the pulse of what's happening globally and identifying emerging trends," he said.
The Bureau combines the efforts of intelligence analysts, counterterrorism officers, and liaison programs that operate internationally.
