"To correct this injustice, on Jan. 1, 2027, I will pardon Sgt. Duran, so that he does not have to spend one more day in prison and so that he does not have this terrible conviction against him."
"Sgt. Duran did not intend to use lethal force against Eric Duprey. Duprey chose to get on a motorbike, fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed without a helmet."
"I took this job to save lives. I felt terrible once I saw Eric Duprey crash."
Bruce Blakeman, the Republican candidate for governor of New York, announced plans to pardon Sgt. Erik Duran, who was convicted of manslaughter in the death of Eric Duprey. Duran was sentenced to three to nine years in prison after throwing a cooler at Duprey, causing a fatal crash. Blakeman criticized the sentence as a 'travesty of justice' and stated that Duran did not intend to use lethal force. Duran is the first NYPD member to be imprisoned for a duty-related death in decades.
