Grocery delivery workers are now guaranteed minimum pay under new City Council laws
Briefly

The New York City Council passed legislation to enhance wage protections for delivery workers, including a minimum pay requirement applicable to grocery delivery workers. Current minimum hourly pay stands at $21.44. New regulations will mandate apps to prompt customers for tips at the time of order instead of post-delivery and to set minimum suggested tip amounts starting at 10%. Delivery workers expressed concerns about past practices that hindered tipping, emphasizing its importance for fair compensation.
"It's a great victory because we've been fighting for a long time to create worker protections," said delivery worker William Medina, 40.
"Tipping still complements every time a deliverista is making that last mile delivery in the snow, in the middle of traffic, in the middle of a heat wave," said Ligia Guallpa.
"They do similar tasks, they have similar risks and they face similar exploitation by apps," she said at a rally on the steps of City Hall before the vote.
"If your business model cannot survive without paying minimum pay wage to workers, it is not a successful one," City Councilmember Sandy Nurse explained.
