Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans for New York's first nuclear power plant in decades, intending to address the state's energy affordability and reliability crises. This decision comes four years after the closure of the Indian Point nuclear facility, which had supplied a significant portion of New York City's energy. The new plant, intended to power roughly 1 million homes, aims to stabilize energy bills and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, despite ongoing concerns about nuclear safety and waste management that have hindered the industry's growth.
"If we don't increase our capacity over the next decade we will see rolling blackouts," Hochul said.
"Ratepayers must know there is reliability," Hochul said.
"The project is necessary to address the state's escalating crises of energy affordability and reliability."
"Despite its advantages, nuclear power has been slow to expand due to concerns about safety and disposal of nuclear waste."
