#fyiSI: Are all DSNY trucks outfitted with garbage pail tippers?
Briefly

Staten Island residents are concerned about whether Sanitation Department trucks can adequately handle newly approved garbage cans. Currently, some trucks lack the necessary tipping mechanisms, but over 300 trucks are expected to be updated soon. The city's garbage can mandate is controversial and not fully enforced until June 2026. Homeowners receiving the School Tax Relief Program will receive official cans for free, and those who bought bins may be reimbursed. Local officials suggest residents report any issues with garbage collection to 311 for potential investigations.
According to a Sanitation spokesperson, not all trucks have been outfitted with tipping mechanisms yet. The agency anticipates that all the trucks will be outfitted with the tippers over the next few years.
If residents' garbage pails aren't being fully emptied to call 311. Complaints could result in an investigation and corrective action.
The city mandate for the new bins won't be implemented until June 2026, and New Yorkers in residential buildings of fewer than 10 units will still be permitted to use any bin with secure lids until then.
New York City's trash can mandate has been a controversial issue for Staten Islanders over the past year, but in March, the City Council passed legislation offering a reprieve to some homeowners in the five boroughs.
