Friday's Headlines: E-Bike Trade Show Edition - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

The Department of Transportation's e-bike trade-in program was launched, allowing delivery workers to exchange uncertified bikes for safer models. The initiative, which will distribute 400 new e-bikes, aims to reduce fire risks associated with unregulated devices. DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez emphasized the program's broader goal of safeguarding the wider community. Participants must present their unsafe bikes and complete an online safety course, adhering to a new speed limit of 15 miles per hour for e-bikes as mandated by city regulations. The $2-million initiative was developed from a 2023 council bill.
This is not just about protecting delivery workers. It's about protecting them, their families, their neighbors, and all New Yorkers from deadly fires.
Delivery workers with an e-bike that does not have a UL-certified battery or a moped that isn't street legal were able to apply for the swap by sending in a picture of their device, and completing an online safety course.
