Former NYC Police Commissioner Thomas Donlon filed a federal lawsuit against Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD officials, claiming widespread corruption within the department. Donlon asserts that he found evidence of corruption and misconduct among the NYPD leadership. After notifying Mayor Adams, he alleges that Adams condoned these actions. The lawsuit is one of five filed in two weeks regarding alleged misconduct in the NYPD. Other former officials have made similar claims, including allegations of improperly granted promotions for financial gain.
"Mayor Adams dismantled the NYPD's chain of command and handed the department to a cabal of cronies and criminals," said John Scola, a lawyer for Mr. Donlon.
Donlon alleges that during his brief time in the role, he 'uncovered systemic corruption and criminal conduct being perpetrated by the NYPD's leadership.'
This is the fifth lawsuit in two weeks alleging that the NYPD has engaged in corruption under Mayor Adams.
James Essig, who served more than 40 years, was chief of detectives until August 2023, and said in the suit that Edward Caban forced him to resign after he objected to promotions of unqualified officers.
