The Secret Service, along with the NYPD and USDA, launched Operation Flagship to tackle EBT fraud amid growing concerns for vulnerable communities. Special Agent Patrick Freaney highlighted that this operation emphasizes the agency's role in combating financial crimes involving illegal debit card machines that steal funds from electronic benefit cards. Scammers, known for altering these machines, can siphon significant amounts of money that families rely on for essentials like food and diapers. The initiative began in Brooklyn and Staten Island, aimed at addressing the ongoing threat posed by fraudsters preying on those in need.
The Secret Service does not just protect the president of the United States; it also protects New Yorkers who are scammed when they swipe an electronic benefit card (EBT) at an unsuspecting device.
Freaney says the operation is placing an extra emphasis on busting those stealing money directly from those who need it most with EBT.
Crooks alter the machines so they immediately withdraw money from an EBT card when it is swiped, potentially stealing hundreds of dollars.
It's a message to the community that we see the fraud that's going on with the SNAP benefits and EBT benefits.
