Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie blocked a bipartisan bill that aimed to commemorate the victims of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, orchestrating committee placements to ensure its defeat. Sponsored by Republican Assemblyman Lester Chang, the bill sought to elevate Oct. 7 alongside other commemorative days in New York. Heastie's actions have drawn criticism, particularly as they coincided with the withdrawal of a resolution honoring Palestinian Americans. Accusations of veiled antisemitism have surfaced from other lawmakers, highlighting tensions within the Assembly regarding how minority communities are recognized.
It shouldn't be controversial just because I'm a Republican, said Chang (R-Brooklyn). "It's ugly. It's destructive. It's hurtful for both sides."
Albany's legislature is rotten with veiled antisemitism, and their sabotage of my bill, A06557, to honor October 7th victims and fight hate is proof," said Brown.
