The FDNY has established a new policy banning romantic relationships between managers and their subordinates to address issues of sexual harassment within the department. The directive mandates that any romantic involvement must be reported to higher authorities, leading to possible reassignment to prevent conflicts of interest. This policy emerges amidst a critical increase in female firefighters, reflecting ongoing efforts to cultivate a safer work environment. Violators face disciplinary actions, including termination, underscoring the FDNY's commitment to handling harassment cases effectively. This policy had been delayed previously and is viewed as a necessary step forward for the department.
"Managers and supervisors are prohibited from engaging in any romantic or intimate relationship with a subordinate they routinely supervise," says the directive issued this week.
The FDNY hopes the new policy cuts down on sexual harassment cases, with 22 of 113 complaints in recent years involving subordinates against supervisors.
This was sitting on the previous commissioner's desk for a long time, and ultimately she left, never approving it," an insider told The Post.
Violators will be subject to discipline, which could include firing, highlighting the seriousness with which the FDNY is approaching this issue.
