The proposed bicycle ban on Rockaway Beach's boardwalk was abandoned following strong community opposition and protests. Initially aimed at curbing speeding cyclists to enhance safety, the measure generated significant backlash from local residents who felt that they shouldn't be penalized for the actions of a few. City officials, including NYPD and Parks Enforcement, are now focusing on improving enforcement and signage rather than imposing a complete ban on cycling, in order to preserve the leisure atmosphere of the beach while ensuring safety for all.
I'm glad that the Parks Department is going to continue allowing Rockaway residents to enjoy their bikes on the boardwalk this summer, but now we need real enforcement.
This space is meant for leisure, not speed trials, and we cannot put the safety of beachgoers at risk.
