Eric Adams rips Brooklyn lawmaker who called for Rikers closure then fought jail in his own district: 'Hypocrite'
Briefly

The Adams administration criticized City Councilman Lincoln Restler for opposing the construction of a new borough-based jail in Boerum Hill, despite his support for closing Rikers Island. Restler voiced his concerns in a newsletter, citing mismanagement of the old jail's demolition and the City’s approval of disruptive after-hours work. He is actively seeking solutions to noise impacts on the community. In response, City Hall accused Restler of hypocrisy for calling for the closure of Rikers while attempting to stall the jail project in his area, highlighting the ongoing tensions in local governance.
While I have long supported the plan to close Rikers Island (where four detainees have tragically died in custody so far this year), I have strongly opposed the City's mishandling of the construction of the new jail in our community.
Publicly, Lincoln Restler never misses a chance to call for the closure of Rikers Island and the expedited construction of borough-based jails, but privately, he is trying to stall the construction of the borough-based jail in his own neighborhood.
