Elevated Lead Levels in Kids in NYCHA Childcare Raise Alarms
Briefly

In a span of three months, four children in New York City Housing Authority childcare centers exhibited elevated blood lead levels, markedly increasing from only three cases in 2022 and 2023. Childcare centers in Brevoort, Queensbridge South, and Sotomayor Houses underwent immediate closures for lead abatement after notifications. Queensbridge South accounted for a substantial portion of lead-positive components found. Upcoming testing for lead in paint at 139 other childcare centers is delayed until 2026, while ongoing apartment inspections are set for completion by year-end. Experts highlight the risks of lead exposure in children, linking it to serious developmental issues.
Between October 2024 and January 2025, four children in NYCHA childcare centers were reported with elevated lead levels, prompting immediate closures and lead abatement measures.
The Queensbridge South daycare center was particularly concerning, with two children having elevated blood lead levels and the center accounting for nearly half of the lead-positive components.
Experts warn that there are no safe levels of lead in the blood, particularly in children, who may experience developmental delays and behavioral issues.
Lead inspections in NYCHA apartments are ongoing, but further testing of paint at other childcare centers will not commence until 2026.
