"In this centennial year, my hope is that we finally catch up to where my parents were 61 years ago, that we honor their legacy not only in remembrance but in action, how we educate our children, how we strengthen our communities, how we treat one another with common decency."
"What we have done is to look to write a new story from our City Hall, a story where Black New Yorkers do not have to turn to it and be told to fend for themselves but instead where they can see an institution that does more for Black New Yorkers. The question before us is not just whether we admire what Malcolm X did but whether we have the courage to carry forth his struggle."
The 61st Commemoration of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz took place at the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Center with over 100 attendees. The event honored elders through Vanguard awards given to prominent figures including columnist Herb Boyd, artists Sonia Sanchez and Rashidah Ismaili, and educators Dr. Brenda Greene and Dr. Anthony Green. Two of Malcolm and Betty Shabazz's daughters attended, with Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz emphasizing the need to honor their parents' legacy through action in education, community strengthening, and treating one another with decency. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Civil Rights attorney Benjamin Crump spoke about utilizing power to create equity and carrying forward Malcolm's struggle for Black New Yorkers.
