Hagan Scotten, whose messages were revealed in a Justice Department filing, expressed concerns about the credibility of the case and acknowledged the potential for political ambitions influencing the prosecution. Although Scotten resigned after refusing a DOJ order to withdraw the case, he emphasized the ethical obligations of prosecutors in his resignation letter.
"[US Attorney-1] obviously has political ambitions, and I think suggesting we doubt that just costs us credibility," Scotten allegedly wrote to his team.
"Any assistant US attorney would know that our laws and traditions do not allow using the prosecutorial power to influence other citizens..."
