Device ignited at Gracie Mansion protest was an improvised explosive, NYPD says
"Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested on scene yesterday and are in custody in connection with this matter. Further testing is being conducted on both devices. Officials are working with federal prosecutors on the investigation."
"What followed was even more disturbing. Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are."
"The Lang-led protest outside of Gracie Mansion was called 'Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City, Stop New York City Public Muslim Prayer' and drew roughly 20 people, according to police. But the counterprotest drew roughly 125 demonstrators at its peak."
Two improvised explosive devices were found outside Gracie Mansion during simultaneous anti-Islam and counterprotests on Saturday. At least one device was ignited during the demonstrations. Two men, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, were arrested at the scene and remain in custody. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is Muslim, was inside the residence during the incident. The NYPD is conducting further testing on both devices and working with federal prosecutors. Mayor Mamdani condemned the original protest organized by conservative influencer Jake Lang as rooted in bigotry and called the explosive device attempt criminal and reprehensible. The anti-Islam protest drew approximately 20 people while the counterprotest attracted roughly 125 demonstrators.
