Mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo intensified his campaign by attacking President Trump over his proposed federal budget cuts, which he believes would deeply affect New York City. During visits to Brooklyn churches and in an NY1 interview, Cuomo warned that the cuts could aggravate ongoing issues such as affordable housing and homelessness. He highlighted the need for a political coalition against Trump’s budget reductions targeting key health programs. Additionally, he mentioned his commitment to engage with diverse New York communities as he campaigns, while addressing questions about the implications for New York’s city budget.
This is going to compound every problem we have in New York. We have an affordable housing problem, we have a homeless problem, and you look at the cuts that he has made, it goes directly to the needs of New York City.
We have to fight him on every battle on every one of these programs. We have to try and stop him in the U.S. Congress, which I believe we have a good chance of doing. We have to build a political coalition nationwide.
I think that it's a very important time that New Yorkers come together.
The city's budget process cannot be finalized until there is more clarity on the potential federal cuts.
