Counterprotester Threw Improvised Explosive at Anti-Islam Event in NYC, Police Say
"Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department's bomb squad determined the object wasn't a hoax device or smoke bomb, but an "improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death." The device extinguished itself steps from police officers, Tisch noted."
"The sparsely attended event drew a far larger group of counterdemonstrators, including one person who tossed a smoking object containing nuts, bolts, screws and a "hobby fuse" into the crowd, police said."
""Violence at a protest is never acceptable," Mamdani said in a statement Sunday. "The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are.""
During a "Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City" event led by far-right activist Jake Lang on Manhattan's Upper East Side, a counterprotester threw an improvised explosive device containing nuts, bolts, screws, and a hobby fuse into the crowd. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the device could have caused serious injury or death but extinguished itself near police officers. A second device was passed between counterprotesters but failed to ignite. Two counterprotesters were taken into custody with charges pending. A third suspicious device was later found in a vehicle, prompting street closures and building evacuations. Federal prosecutors and the FBI are assisting the investigation.
