Council questions e-bike enforcement crackdown
Briefly

Last month, New York City's police began rigorously enforcing traffic laws against e-bike riders, following community outcry over increasing accidents. The new approach involves issuing criminal court summonses, a shift from civil summonses deemed insufficient by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. She defended the crackdown as necessary to create accountability among riders who often violated laws without consequences. However, some councilmembers raised concerns about potential racial bias in enforcement and the implications for immigrants facing legal repercussions under the Trump administration.
Anecdotally, I think it's working [...] We cannot live in a consequence-free environment and e-bikes were generally living in a consequence-free environment.
It does not increase public trust in how this is being enforced if you cannot even articulate for me how officers are using this discretion.
I’m concerned about more people getting swept up in our criminal justice system who don’t need it.
