Federal immigration authorities arrested Columbia University senior Ellie Aghayeva early Thursday morning after agents gained entry to her university-owned residence by falsely claiming to search for a missing child. Hours later, the federal government reversed the detention after Mayor Zohran Mamdani raised concerns about the arrest during an unrelated meeting with President Trump, who agreed to release her immediately. Aghayeva, a neuroscience and politics student from Azerbaijan, had not been publicly linked to pro-Palestinian protests on campus. During the same meeting, Mamdani also requested Trump drop deportation cases against other current and former students involved in protest activities.
