Citi Bike rushes to add speedometers after Mayor Adams orders 15 mph e-bike speed limit
Briefly

Citi Bike is facing a new challenge following Mayor Eric Adams' announcement of a citywide 15 mph speed limit for electric bicycles and scooters. With concerns rising, the largest bike-sharing system, operating 15,000 e-bikes that can hit 18 mph, will implement speedometers on their bikes to help riders adhere to the new rule. Despite being informed only a day prior to the announcement, Citi Bike plans to adapt its digital screens to meet the regulation, which follows an incident involving an e-bike injury to a child.
"If this policy goes into effect, Citi Bike will deploy a speedometer on our e-bikes so riders have the information they need to comply with the new rule," Citi Bike General Manager Patrick Knoth said.
Citi Bike representatives said the speedometers would not require new hardware, but would be a feature added to the existing digital screens on the company's e-bikes.
According to Citi Bike ridership data, 69% of all the system's rides in May were on e-bikes, with membership-based ridership tripling over the last three years.
Adams' order comes less than two weeks after a 3-year-old girl in South Williamsburg was injured after being struck by an e-bike rider in the Bedford Avenue bike lane.
