Recent incidents of indecent exposure on the Staten Island Railway have raised concerns about safety among passengers. While many commuters claim to feel safe, there are calls for a stronger police presence, particularly during less crowded times. Riders like Timothy Miller express frustrations about infrequent police visibility on the trains, discussing the need for better surveillance, especially during early mornings and late afternoons. Although passenger Janette Rosendo feels safer during peak hours, others notice a lack of uniformed officers. Police investigations are ongoing, and measures for increased visibility may be needed to enhance commuter reassurance.
"I'm not surprised [to hear about the indecent exposure incident]. I don't see the police at all," said Timothy Miller, an Oakwood resident who rides the Staten Island Railway to commute to work.
"I usually only take [the train] during the morning or the afternoon, so I'm never on it when it's dark. So at least when I'm on it, there are police on it, and I don't worry about anything happening," explained Janette Rosendo, a Tottenville resident.
