On WNYC's The Brian Lehrer Show, MTA Chair Janno Lieber discussed the agency's recent improvements to Penn Station amid a federal takeover. He noted that MTA, which acts as a tenant in the station, is involved in federal efforts to enhance the iconic hub. The MTA recently completed major renovations to the 33rd Street Concourse, significantly benefiting LIRR and subway riders. However, Lieber acknowledged challenges in upgrading the entire station, as Amtrak, the landlord, is now managing the overall redevelopment of Penn Station.
'We fixed up the portion of the station that our riders use the most and that we control. It's part of our lease,' Lieber said.
'I want passengers to have really safe, convenient, usable facilities, so we were moving pretty quickly to try to make the rest of the station as good as the 33rd Street Concourse project, but the new administration came in and said, You can't do this. We're giving it to Amtrak,' and that's okay, Lieber said.
