City officials have announced a significant $390 million investment to upgrade Bushwick's sewer system, particularly along Knickerbocker Avenue. This project will enhance water drainage and reduce flooding, which has significantly increased in frequency. The renovation includes replacing approximately three miles of sewer pipes and improving water mains, enhancing the neighborhood's infrastructure overall. The initiative is part of a larger $5 billion plan to improve city infrastructure and addresses the longstanding need for upgrades in the neighborhood facing more extreme weather conditions.
City Council Member Sandy Nurse emphasized the historic nature of this investment, stating it’s one of the largest in Bushwick's sewer infrastructure repairs we’ve seen in decades.
Deputy Mayor Meera Joshi pointed out the urgent need for new sewer infrastructure since the 1960s, which has become critical due to increasing extreme weather patterns.
