Wu announces independent investigation into BPS bus safety following deadly crash
Briefly

Following the tragic death of 5-year-old Lens Joseph due to a bus accident, Boston Public Schools has announced an independent investigation into its transportation system. This decision comes amidst public outcry regarding safety concerns related to Transdev, the contractor responsible for bus services since 2013. Mayor Michelle Wu and Superintendent Mary Skipper have enlisted former prosecutor Natashia Tidwell to evaluate safety policies and recommend changes. The investigation will scrutinize Transdev's accountability, as prior reports indicate it has faced multiple personal injury claims during its contract tenure.
BPS has used Transdev for its transportation services since 2013. The company hires, trains, and manages around 750 school bus drivers in Boston.
Transdev company is responsible for ensuring all its drivers have the necessary licensing, training, and certifications.
We are heartbroken, Wu said in a statement. No family should ever suffer the loss of a child, and the public deserves a full understanding of how this could have happened and what changes are needed.
The death of that boy, 5-year-old Lens Joseph, led to sustained public outcry and calls for increased scrutiny on Transdev.
