We don't care': ICE agents flout the law as they detain man at Federal Plaza after judge's order bars arrests | amNewYork
A federal judge issued a stay preventing agents from making courthouse detainments at Federal Plaza and nearby 290 Broadway. Less than a day later, agents returned and detained a 21-year-old man from Honduras outside a courtroom on the 12th floor of 26 Federal Plaza. A detention coordinator for Saint Peter’s Church said he provided agents with copies of the ruling and told them they could not conduct detainments inside the facility. The agents allegedly responded that they did not care. Immigration advocates and a present activist condemned the actions as a violation of constitutional rights and a failure to provide any defense for the detention. Advocates had previously viewed the stay as a major relief for immigrants attending required hearings and check-ins.
"Less than 24 hours after a federal judge issued a stay prohibiting agents from making courthouse detainments at Federal Plaza and nearby 290 Broadway, they were back there on the morning of May 19, stalking the halls outside immigration court and making at least one detainment."
"According to Peter Melck Kuttel, a detention coordinator for Father Fabian Arias' Saint Peter's Church, he handed the agents copies of the ruling and told them that they could not be in the facility making detainments. We don't care, they allegedly told him in response."
"At 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, sources reported, masked ICE agents took a 21-year-old man from Honduras into custody outside a courtroom on the 12th floor of 26 Federal Plaza. The sources said the detained man has no criminal record warranting detention."
"Father Fabian Arias, an immigration rights activist, was present when the man was detained. He called the violation disgusting. Every day, the administration violates the Constitution and democracy. This young man was vulnerable, and they did not provide any defense for why they took him, Arias said."
