A recent study published in JAMA Network Open has revealed a staggering 43% rise in cannabis-laced edible consumption among adolescents in Canada following legalization in 2018. Researchers analyzed responses from over 106,000 students in grades 7 to 11 from 2018 to 2022, indicating a 26% overall increase in cannabis use among youth, alongside a 34% rise in smoking and a 28% uptick in co-use with alcohol. As a result, many young individuals no longer perceive occasional cannabis use as harmful, creating concerns among health professionals regarding the impact of these products, especially with their appealing packaging.
"The results are a serious buzzkill for parental peace of mind. Legalization was linked to a 26% jump in overall adolescent cannabis use - with edible use soaring 43%."
"It's nice to see some numbers showing exactly what we're seeing in the emergency room, which is that legalization of THC products coincides with an increased number of children or adolescents using these products..."
